West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel was warned by on-field umpires for using abusive language following an interaction with England captain Joe Root during the third day of the third test in St Lucia on Monday, according to British media reports.

According to the Guardian newspaper, Gabriel’s comments were not picked up by stump microphones but Root was heard telling the bowler: “There’s nothing wrong with being gay”.

Umpires Rod Tucker and Kumar Dharmasena had a word with Gabriel soon after.

Root, who finished the day on 111 not out, refused to divulge what Gabriel said when asked about the incident at the end of day’s play, saying it should stay on the field.

“It’s test cricket and (Shannon) is an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a test match. Sometimes people say things on the field that they might regret,” the report quoted Root as telling reporters.

“I don’t want anything said in the middle to ruin what’s been a good test series for him and his team.

“He’s a good guy who plays hard cricket and is proud to be in the position he is. The battle was a good contest.”

West Indies’ coach Richard Pybus said he was not aware of what transpired but promised to address the issue if anything “untoward” was said.

At the end of day three, England were 325-4 in the second innings, with a commanding lead of 448 runs with Root and Ben Stokes at the crease.

West Indies lead the three-test series 2-0 after victories in Bridgetown and Antigua.

Considered part of the elite group also featuring Kiwi Kane Williamson, Australian Steve Smith and England's Joe Root, Kohli has surged ahead after a stupendous 2018 and is currently the top-ranked Test as well as one-day batsman.

"Everything about Virat's game stands out. I think he is head and shoulders above anyone else in world cricket today," Sangakkara told a news channel.

"And I think going forward, he will be one of the greatest ever cricketers, if not the greatest ever," said the Sri Lankan batting great.

With 39 centuries from 222 ODIs, Kohli is second only to compatriot Sachin Tendulkar -- who scored 49 from 463 -- in the century-makers' list of 50-over internationals.

He has also scored 25 hundreds in 77 Tests.

Sangakkara is amazed by Kohli's ability to succeed across formats.

"He has this incredible knack of scoring runs and has a very, very solid method that he believes in..." said the former Sri Lanka captain.

"... if you see the tempo he bats with, it hardly changes. He does read the situation very well. He is a very passionate guy, you see that in his expressions on the field... it's the overall aspect of both the person and how he has sorted his batting and his attitude," he added.

Sangakkara's former team-mate Mahela Jayawardene lauded how Kohli handled the pressure of leading the team of a cricket-mad nation of 1.3 billion.

"It's not just about the ability Virat has but to understand the way to handle pressure not just on the field but also off the field, and the expectations," said Jayawardene.

"We grew up with Sachin who had to perhaps experience the same thing. And for the next generation, it's probably on Virat's shoulders..." he added.

After the successful series against Australia and New Zealand, Indian selectors are keen to test out few more players ahead of the World Cup. The selectors plan to strike a balance by resting senior batsmen, rotating pacers and trying out the back-up options for the 2019 World Cup. This could well mean a recall for Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul as Rohit Sharma could be rested for the ODI series against Australia.

After the successes in Australia and New Zealand, the Indian selectors and management would now look to finalise their World Cup squad during the home series against Australia. There were plenty of boxes ticked down under, but now the selectors would want to test out the bench strength.

As per the Hindu, the selectors are mulling rotating the World Cup certainties during the Australia ODI series and giving a go to few other options. Rohit Sharma, who led India towards the back end of the New Zealand trip, might be rested in the latter half of the series and this could then give a chance to Ajinkya Rahane and KL Rahul as the selectors are looking at a third opening option for the World Cup.

Also, the management could give more game time to Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant in the middle order as this has been a problem for India in the recent past.

Changes to the bowling group too

As far as the bowling attack is concerned, workload management is a big issue considering the IPL which is just before the World Cup. Hence, the frontline options in Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Mohammed Shami might not play in all the games.

Earlier, coach Ravi Shastri had already said that the workload of all the bowlers will be keenly watched and monitored during the IPL.

"We want to make sure that they play only an optimal number of matches without affecting their fitness or form for the World Cup. We will seek proper rest for them, so they are in absolute readiness for the World Cup," Shastri told Cricbuzz.

These latest developments come in the wake of statements made by a chief selector who had said that Rahane and Pant are very much part of the World Cup ambitions and hence, this series could be the opportunity for both players to stake a claim.

"A healthy headache. The progression of Rishabh in the last one year is phenomenal across the formats. What we actually felt is he needs a bit of maturity now, gain more experience. That is the reason we have included him in India A series wherever possible," Prasad was as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

Ranji Trophy’s highest-scoring cricketer in the 2017-18 season, Mayank Agarwal, has finally got a bat sponsor on board.

CEAT Ltd. on Tuesday announced its association with the Karnataka batsman. The brand already sponsors cricketers like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Harmanpreet Kaur.

The new deal means Mayank will be seen playing with a CEAT bat in all formats of the game.

“I am extremely proud to associate with CEAT, and it’s an honour for me to represent the brand, both on and off the cricket field. CEAT has a long and illustrious history in cricket, and it gives me a great sense of pride and responsibility to join the group of talented and successful cricketers at CEAT.”

Mayank Agarwal, Indian Cricketer

Mayank Agarwal made his mark by becoming the top scorer for India at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup. His remarkable performance in the 2017-18 Ranji Season, where he scored over a 1000 runs earned him the Madhavrao Scindia Award that is presented to the highest run-scorer in the season. That performance paved the way for his entry into Kings XI Punjab at the 2018 IPL auction.

Mayank recently made a dream Test debut against Australia during the Border - Gavaskar Series on Boxing Day, 26 December 2018. He went on to score 76 runs in his first innings of the match, which was the highest score by an Indian cricketer on Test debut in Australia.

Joe Root, became the first England player to score a century in the series as the visitors strengthened their stranglehold in the third Test against West Indies on Day 3 at Beausejour Stadium on Tuesday.

The England captain compiled a patient, unbeaten 111 in St Lucia as the visitors closed in on a consolation victory after losing the first two Tests in the three-match series.

Ben Stokes was on 29 and England were 325 for four in their second innings at the close, an overall lead of 448 runs with two days remaining in Gros Islet.

Root had endured a poor series with the bat, making just 55 runs in his five previous innings.

But he made amends by notching up his 16th Test century with a classic drive through mid-off for four, albeit off a generous full toss from Alzarri Joseph.

Root's celebration showed just how much the innings meant to him as he punched the air, hugged team mate Stokes and then soaked up the minute-long applause from a pro-England crowd singing his name.

Root did not want to read too much into his recent low scores, especially since a couple of those dismissals had been to virtually unplayable deliveries.

"You can look at it like that but, you can look at some of the dismissals I've had in there too," he told a BBC podcast.

He added, "You have to be realistic sometimes. If you feel form is a numbers game, then I have had a lean run but I've got a good approach to batting and it's stood me in good stead until now."

Though the series is lost, he said the match was far from being irrelevant.

"It's been a tough three games and we have been outplayed at times so I think it was important we showed some resilience, bounced back and showed what we are capable of as a side," he added.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain agreed.

"Some people might say the series is gone, but not if you're the England captain," Hussain said on the international television broadcast.

He added, "They've got an Ashes summer, a World Cup summer. It now could be 2-1 and a hundred in your last Test innings of the winter in Test cricket."

"That sets up you perfectly for what lies ahead, so this game and this innings was absolutely vital for Root."

West Indies endured a long day in the field, picking up just four wickets.

Their cause was not helped by a thigh injury incurred early by pace bowler Keemo Paul, who departed on a stretcher, leaving West Indies with only three quick bowlers complemented by Roston Chase's part-time spin.

Batsman Darren Bravo was also absent from the field after being struck on a finger on Day 2 of Test match..
