India vs New Zealand: Daryl Mitchell, Blair Tickner earn maiden call-ups for T20Is against India
Wellington: New Zealand picked two uncapped players in all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and pacer Blair Tickner for the three-match T20 International series against India starting February 6 here. Regular skipper Kane Williamson was Wednesday named captain of the 14-strong squad after skipping the one-off T20 against Sri Lanka. The Black Caps are currently competing in a five-match one-day series against with India and have conceded a 0-3 lead.
“Doug Bracewell brought in as a replacement for the injured Jimmy Neesham ahead of the most recent T20 against Sri Lanka, has retained his place in the squad,” New Zealand Cricket said in a statement.
India will be led by Rohit Sharma in the series as Virat Kohli has been rested to manage his workload.
Mitchell and Tickner have been rewarded for their good performances in New Zealand’s domestic T20 league — the Super Smash. Mitchell scored a 23-ball 61 for Northern Knights against Central Stags recently and was also in good form for New Zealand A in one-day cricket. Tickner will be part of teh Kiwi squad for the final T20I as a replacement for Lockie Ferguson, who is there for the first two matches.
“Both Daryl and Blair have been rewarded for the strong form they’ve produced in domestic cricket,” said Gavin Larsen, the New Zealand selector.
“Daryl has shown his value with the bat and also tends to bowl at some tough times for the Knights, and Blair is well-respected among his team-mates and opponents alike as someone who bowls a heavy ball at good pace,” he added.
The three-match series will be double-headers alongside women’s matches between the two sides on the same pitch.

Hashim Amla is a true veteran of the game. Not only he has been one of the finest number three Test players in many years, but Amla also owns the reputation of being a nice guy off the field. Over the years, since his debut, he had faced many world-class bowlers; however; ahead of the series-deciding ODI against Pakistan on Wednesday, Amla revealed who was the best bowler he had come across. In an interview to SuperSport, the right-handed batsman said banned fast bowler, Mohammad Asif was the best bowler he faced.
Veteran Amla lauds tainted Asif
Nine years back, three Pakistan players named Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were found guilty in a spot-fixing case during Lord’s Test. Later, the ICC slapped respective bans on the players. However, of them, only Amir returned to national setup; as both Salman and Asif remain on the sidelines. Though it has been that many years the world didn’t see Asif bowl in the international arena, Amla considers him as the best of the lot till date.

Amla added Asif didn’t have express pace, but his accuracy could have anyone on the mat. He said,
“Mohammad Asif is the best one [I faced], and [I know] he got banned for [spot] fixing but at that stage, he was the best fast bowler I’ve ever faced. He was not quick, 135kph maybe, but his accuracy was phenomenal,” Amla said.
The 35-year old further talked about Asif’s seam movement. Hashim Amla said he could never tell whether the ball will nip in or out off the pitch.
“We played him in South Africa and even in Pakistan in 2007. [If] he landed in the first stump I didn’t know if it was nipping away or nipping in… He tested your defence really, to the maximum.” the veteran added.

Hashim Amla has travelled the world and is a widely acclaimed batsman. He revealed when he had talked to other batsmen of other countries, Mohammad Asif sits on the top of their list too.
“Funnily enough, as the years have gone by, meeting other cricketers from home, the world over, just loosely chatting… so many of the guys feel exactly the same thing. They said Mohammad Asif was a magician of the ball in a way.”
Meanwhile, the five-match ODI series stands 2-2 at the moment. The fifth and final match of the series is scheduled for Wednesday (January 30th) in Cape Town.

Akhtar had earlier shared a lengthy video on his Twitter account after the clip of Sarfraz's racist taunt towards Proteas all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo went viral on social media. Although Akhtar later decided to delete the video, the damage by then had already been done. Upon his arrival in Karachi, Sarfraz didn't hold back his anger towards Shoaib, calling the criticism as a 'personal attack'. “He [Shoaib Akhtar] is attacking me personally not criticising,” Sarfraz told reporters present at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport. “I accepted my mistake and received the punishment. I want to thank the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for handling this case and fulfilling requirements. I will improve myself and my performance in the future and I thank my supporters for their backing."
Akhtar had asked Sarfraz to make a public apology after breaching the ICC anti-racism code which saw the latter come in the line of fire for his on-field conduct. “This [Sarfaz incident] is not acceptable as a Pakistani. In my opinion, he [Sarfraz] did this in the heat of the moment. I think he should apologize publically”, the Rawalpindi Express had said in the video shared on Twitter. With Shoaib Malik being named as the stand-in skipper, Sarfraz was called back by the PCB. Commenting on the board's decision, the 31-year-old said, "I don't see anything in it as I was playing cricket for the last five months. I will rest and then play Pakistan Super League."
Sarfraz was eligible to play in the third and final T20I between Pakistan and South Africa in the ongoing tour but it seems that the team management has decided to give the skipper a rest ahead of the start of the PSL 2019.

His penchant for hitting double hundreds is universally acknowledged and skipper Rohit Sharma will be eager to make his 200th appearance for India a memorable one with a solid performance against a below-par New Zealand in the fourth ODI here Thursday.
With the series already sealed, Rohit, who has a good record as stand-in captain and has three double hundreds in ODIs to his credit, would aim to tighten the noose around New Zealand in what could be another batting friendly track at Seddon Park.
A 4-0 lead will be India's biggest series win (across formats) in their 52 years of touring New Zealand having first visited the country back in 1967.
For India, the two remaining matches give the side an ideal platform to once again test the bench strength and give the younger men a feel of match situations.
The status of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's hamstring injury is not known but according to team sources, there is nothing much to worry about. A decision on Dhoni's availability will be taken before the toss on Thursday.
In case Dhoni is available and the team management avoids tinkering with the combination, he will walk in as Virat Kohli's replacement. Kohli has been rested for the remiander of the tour.
However, if the visitors opt for a like-for-like replacement, then Indian fans could get a glimpse of the immensely talented Shubman Gill in the senior team jersey.
Billed as one for the future, many experts have found a striking similarity in the 19-year-old Gill's strokes with the ones that Kohli plays effortlessly.
"I wasn't even 10 percent of what he (Shubman) is, when I was 19," Kohli had said after India's series win in Mount Maunganui.
Following Kohli's effusive praise, Shastri and Sharma might just give Gill a go and check if he can also be an option at No 4, where Ambati Rayudu has done a decent, if not spectacular, job so far.
In case both Gill and Dhoni are included, Dinesh Karthik could well be rested.
The bowling department also looks settled with Kuldeep Yadav (8 wickets in 3 games) and Yuzvendra Chahal (6 wickets in 3 games) accounting for 14 wickets so far in the series.
But Mohammed Shami, who has won back-to-back Man of the Match awards, could be given some rest as he has been playing non-stop since the start of the Australia Test series.
In case Shami is rested, Khaleel Ahmed or Mohammed Siraj could be given another chance to stake their claim for the reserve pacer's slot available in the World Cup squad.
For New Zealand, everything seems to have gone haywire since the start of the series and skipper Kane Williamson has agreed that they have been completely outplayed by India.
Their biggest problem has been the inability to read Kuldeep and Chahal, who have inflicted the maximum damage on the home team. Shami has also been pretty lethal in his first spell.
Williamson has got starts but has not been able to convert them with scores of 64, 20 and 28 so far.
Martin Guptill, an otherwise dangerous player, has also not been able to survive the new ball.
Tom Latham and Ross Taylor have performed occasionally but none has been impactful consistently enough to change the complexion of the game.
In the bowling department, the incisive Trent Boult has lacked support and Lockie Ferguson is far from a finished product. His was considered a USP but has been his biggest weakness in the series.
Seamer Doug Bracewell and leg-spinner Ish Sodhi have also been mediocre, which makes the job of the 'Black Caps' tougher in the last two games.
With all-rounder Jimmy Neesham added to the squad, he could well feature in the playing XI as the home team seeks some consolation from the humiliation that they have encountered so far.

With the series in the bag, the Indian team would now look to inflict more pain on New Zealand as they prepare to take them on in the fourth ODI at Hamilton. Virat Kohli is rested, which makes way for Rohit Sharma to lead the side.
In the 8 matches which Rohit has captained so far, he has won 7, which is excellent for India. He was the skipper who led India to an Asia Cup triumph late last year.
He will be playing his 200th ODI for India and will be just the 14th player to join this elite list.
Best opener in the format currently?
As an opener, Rohit has been on a different planet altogether and in his last 49 ODIs, he has scored a fifty-plus score after every two innings and an ODI ton after every four innings. He averages 58.32 as an opener, which is the best by any opener with a minimum of 5,000 ODI runs.
Also, he has hit 215 sixes in his career and needs just one more to move past MS Dhoni.
The batting looks settled despite the absence of Virat Kohli, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar needs to step up and start being more penetrative. Yes, he has the most wickets (65) by an Indian pacer post World Cup 2015, but his strike rate is 40.8, which is not very good. Shami has been excellent with the new ball in the recent past, and this could put pressure on Bhuvneshwar, especially when Jasprit Bumrah makes a comeback.
The average score at Hamilton over the last innings has been 282, which suggests the batsmen will have a party, but when conditions favour the bowlers, they can get the ball to hoop around. Trent Boult took 6 for 33 against Sri Lanka at the same venue back in 2017 and New Zealand would love a repeat of the performance.
The venue has not been a happy hunting ground for India as they have managed to win just a solitary match out of the 5 matches played at the venue.
Kedar Jadhav, who has been a welcome addition to the Indian side, now needs 33 runs to complete 1,000 ODI runs for India. He will be the joint 11th fastest to reach this landmark along with K Srikkanth and Sachin Tendulkar.
