Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed hits back at Shoaib Akhtar for making 'personal attacks'
Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed has stated that former pacer Shoaib Malik is making a personal attack by criticising him following his suspension for hurling racial remarks at South African fast bowler Andile Phehlukwayo during their second ODI in Durban, last week.
The 31-year-old further stated that he has accepted his mistake and is now looking forward to improving his performance.
“He [Shoaib Akhtar] is attacking me personally not criticising,” Geo TV quoted Sarfraz, as saying.
“I accepted my mistake and received the punishment. I want to thank PCB for handling this case and fulfilling requirements. I will improve myself and my performance in the future and I thank my supporters for their backing,” he added.
Akhtar had, reportedly, said that with four-match suspension for the incident, Sarfraz has gotten off easily. The right-arm bowler had also criticised the captain’s remarks saying that such comments are not acceptable in Pakistan.
“This [Sarfraz incident] is not acceptable as a Pakistani. In my opinion he [Sarfraz] did this in the heat of the moment. I think he should apologize publically,” Akhtar had said in a Twitter video.
When quizzed about the decision of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to call him back to the country, the wicket-keeper batsman said that there is nothing surprising about it as he has been playing cricket for past five months and that he would now take some rest.
“I don’t see anything in it as I was playing cricket for the last five months. I will rest and then play Pakistan Super League,” he said.
Sarfraz was handed over a four-match suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching their anti-racism code.
He was picked up by the stump mic saying, “Hey black [man], where is your mother sitting? What prayer did you get her to say for you today?” (Abay kaalay, teri ammi aaj kahan baitheen hain? Kya parhwa ke aya hai aaj tu?).
As the issue raked up, the batsman had apologised personally to Phehlukwayo and had also issued a public apology.

Faf du Plessis plays down South Africa's 2019 ICC World Cup chances
Faf du Plessis said South Africa will go into the 2019 ICC World Cup with lowered expectations, which could work to their advantage.
Cape Town: South Africa captain Faf du Plessis picked hosts England and 2011 champions India as the title favourites for this year’s Cricket World Cup and said his side will go into the tournament with lowered expectations, which could work to their advantage.
South Africa’s World Cup adventures have often ended in unfortunate circumstances — including falling foul of an unfair rain rule, misreading the Duckworth–Lewis run-rate requirement, or comical run outs at the death.
Four years ago they seemed to have one foot in the final until New Zealand pipped them in a thrilling semi-final by belting a six off the penultimate ball of the match.
Such results have led to South Africa being labelled ‘chokers’ at the 50-over event, and in turn, has lowered their expectations for the 30 May to July 14 tournament.
“We will go with a little bit less pressure on us as a team in terms of the expectation of winning it,” Du Plessis, who team are ranked fourth in the ODI standings, said on Tuesday.
“It is pretty clear that England and India are the two favourites.
“We are a young group and the guys are just excited about the opportunity.”
However, Du Plessis is aware that South Africa will still have to deal with a lot of hype in the run-up and during the tournament as well as the narrative of their past failures.
“We have gone to tournaments in the past where we have felt like we had the strongest team on paper, but cricket is not played on paper,” he said.
“When opponents look at us now, we are not the strongest team. But when a South Africa team goes to the World Cup, the chat in the media starts, even the opposition starts to chat!”
Mental Challenge:
Du Plessis believes managing the mental side will be key for his squad, which is expected to include 10 debutants.
“I remember going through the process of the previous World Cup (in 2015),” he said. “Going through the hurt of putting in so much time and energy into trying to win a trophy, and by the end, you are absolutely shattered.
“Yes, all of us badly want to win a World Cup but for me as a captain, it is very important to make sure that players don’t try to be supermen to win.
“I have felt like we have been guilty of that in the past ... and that expectation can (put) a lot of weight on your shoulders.
“They just need to go there and be the best they can be.”
The World Cup will be played in a round-robin format with all 10 nations pitted against each other in the first round and the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.
South Africa open their campaign against England at The Oval on May 30.

Rohit Sharma certain to notch up another 200
Rohit Sharma is certain to bring up another double century in ODIs when he takes the field as India captain in Virat Kohli’s absence in the fourth ODI against New Zealand at Hamilton on Thursday.
Rohit is set to play his 200th ODI for India. The 31-year-old will be the 14th Indian and the 80th in the world to turn up in 200 or more ODIs.
Why is Rohit’s achievement special?
92 players before Rohit Sharma have played 200 ODIs. But none have achieved what Rohit has so far. Rohit has a special connection with double centuries. He is the only cricketer to have hit three double tons in ODIs. His first (209) was against Australia at Bangalore in 2013. A year later he rewrote the history of cricket by slamming an unbeaten 264, which is still the highest score individual score in ODIs, against Sri Lanka at Kolkata. He had to wait for 3 more years to get his third double ton, the opposition was same though. The India opener slammed an unbeaten 209 against Sri Lanka at Mohali in 2017.
Apart from an uncanny knack of hitting double hundreds in ODIs, Rohit is also one of the most prolific six-hitters of the game. In the last ODI, he equalled MS Dhoni’s tally for the most number of sixes for India by hitting depositing Lockie Ferguson over square leg which marked his 215th six for India. He is also the only cricketer to average more than one six per match. He is the quickest to 200 ODI sixes.
Stellar record as captain
Rohit’s 200th ODI will be special for another reason. He will lead India in Kohli’s absence, who has been rested from the last two ODIs and the following T20I series. Rohit’s short record as Indian captain is phenomenal. In his 8 matches as captain, Rohit has scored 534 runs at a mindboggling average of 106.8 that includes two centuries, one of them being a double ton against Sri Lanka in 2017. Naturally, Rohit's performance has rubbed off the team’s one too. India have lost only one ODI out of 8 in which Rohit has led.

After financial assistance from cricket community, former India player Jacob Martin is out of danger
With the cricket community chipping in with financial assistance after his accident, former India cricketer Jacob Martin is out of danger now and has moved from Intensive Care Unit to the general ward, reported the Indian Express.
Martin, 46, has played 10 One-Day Internationals for India and 138 first-class matches. The former Baroda captain injured his lung and liver in a road accident and had been on ventilator support for a month since.
“There are people who donated big and there were some who donated small depending upon their capacity,” Martin’s wife Khyati is quoted as saying. “I got help from Indian cricketers, BCCI, Baroda Cricket Association and even Chennai Super Kings but I will be needing more financial assistance in the coming days as chances are that Jacob will be in hospital for two more months.”
Jacob Martin is doing well, out of ventilator support, tracheostomy’s hole is sealed and he can talk.

Martin is reported to have received around Rs 16 lakh as assistance from various quarters while the hospital expenses incurred so far have been more than Rs 15 lakh and expected to increase, as he could be spending more weeks there for his rehab.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, pacers Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan have provided financial assistance while Baroda and current India cricketer Krunal Pandya sent a blank check, added the report. Recently-retired World Cup winner Munaf Patel also chipped in after being approached by the BCA.
Martin was struggling to meet the expenses needed for his treatment, reports emerged last week. The BCCI had then sent Rs 5 lakh according to The Telegraph.

Highlights
- In Australia, combining superbly with Ishant and Bumrah, the fast bowler took 16 wickets in four Tests at 26.18
- He got the MoM award in the first and third ODI on the tour of New Zealand
- “It’s the fittest that I’ve seen him,” Virat Kohli said commenting on Shami's superb show
Clearly worried about the turn of events, Shami had seemed distracted the previous evening and was smashed around for 96 runs off his 10 overs. Worse was to follow the next day: When the BCCI announced fresh contracts for the Indian players, Shami’s name was missing. Worried about the image of the Indian cricketer post the controversy, the BCCI had decided to withhold his contract.
The speedster, who was the hero of India’s memorable Test win in Johannesburg against South Africa, taking 5/28 in the second innings, had to now undergo an anti-corruption inquiry by the BCCI, which soon cleared him of any wrongdoing. Shami got his contract, but lost his place in the ODI team after failing the yo-yo test.
Now, barely a year later, Shami is a certainty for the World Cup. Adversity seems to have made him better. That he had worked hard on his fitness was evident in England last summer, when he played all the five Tests of the series, taking 16 wickets to emerge as one of the few shining lights in a series India lost 1-4.
Before going to Australia, Shami played a Ranji match for Bengal against Kerala with a rider that he couldn’t bowl more than 15 overs in an innings — he ended up bowling 26.
In Australia, combining superbly with Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, the fast bowler took 16 wickets in four Tests at 26.18, as India’s pace battery played a huge part in the team’s 2-1 triumph Down Under. Picked for the ODIs after a long time, Shami put up a decent show in Australia, before coming into his own in New Zealand, getting the Man-of-the-Match award in the first and third ODIs. In three ODIs, he has picked seven wickets @14.71 prompting skipper Virat Kohli to compliment the pacer. “It’s the fittest that I’ve seen him,” he said.
“He’s the main reason why we are dominating opponents. He’s a captain’s delight. A few personal problems were pulling him down, but from this Australian tour, he’s been the difference between us and the opposition. He’s the ‘Virat Kohli’ of our bowling. It’s because of bowlers like him that a captain will feel that his team can pick 20 wickets anytime. He’s in complete control of whatever he wants to bowl,” praised former India seamer Raju Kulkarni.
Shami’s sizzling form has gladdened the heart of chief selector MSK Prasad too.
“He’s been phenomenal. Right through the last year, since the series against South Africa, he’s been bowling extremely well. Credit also must go to the fitness regimen that he’s been put under by Shankar (Basu, team India trainer) and Patrick (Farhart, physio). The bowling coach (Bharat Arun) has been working on him.
"Credit should also go to the workload management, which has kept him fresh. We didn’t pick him against the West Indies at home against India,” Prasad told TOI.
The former India stumper also praised the BCCI for standing by the pacer during his tough time.
Explaining what makes Shami so dangerous for batsmen, Prasad said: “According to biomechanics, the entire momentum should be directed towards the target. In this case, the target is the stumps. If you see a majority of his wickets, they’re either bowled or lbw. If you see his body, his rhythm, everything is directed towards the target — he’s blessed with it. Probably, that’s why he generates so much pace.”
Former India batsman and chief selector, Sandeep Patil, who picked Shami for India in early 2013, said: “I first saw him about eight years back when I was a director at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), after Arun asked me to have a look at him. He was a special bowler. I feel so proud that I was a part of the system when these boys got selected. We got a lot of stick for dropping some greats, but today it’s been proved that it was an ideal decision.”
When Shami was dropped from the Indian team last year after failing to clear the yo-yo test, Patil had aired his views about the need to back the pacer in what was a difficult phase. “I’m happy to see him make a strong comeback. It’s not easy when your mind is unstable. I had said at that time that considering the rough time he was going through, he deserved another crack at the yo-yo test,” he recalls.
A conversation with Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary, who is his close friend, gives one an idea about the steel that Shami’s made of.
“It’s his immense mental strength that has helped him overcome that phase. All his personal issues were out in the public domain. I knew that he’d bounce back. His face or body language never gave me the indication that he was going through a tough time,” says Tiwary.
Tiwary tells you what helped Shami overcome the most tumultuous period in his life.
“He deserves all the credit for his success because his vision was clear. He knew that if he had to overcome these issues, he had to keep his focus on cricket. He worked hard on his game, and kept himself away from all these issues. The best thing he did was that he wasn’t in Kolkata when this controversy erupted. He was in his native place (Amroha). That really helped him. He used to upload his practice videos from there,” Tiwary recalls.
What makes Shami a menacing bowler? “After Zaheer Khan, if there is one bowler I’ve seen who can land the ball on the seam, it’s Shami,” says Tiwary.
Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and two T20Is for India, believes that like in the Tests, Shami can be India’s strike bowler in the ODIs too.
Patil, though, cautions that it’s crucial that Shami’s form lasts till the World Cup.
“Seeing his rhythm and form, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he remains fit and consistent till the World Cup, because main picture abhi baaki hai!,” he says.
