Call for DRS in Ranji Trophy knockouts

BENGALURU: While there weren’t plenty of runs scored in the Ranji Trophy semifinal between Karnataka and Saurashtra that concluded here on Monday, instances of frayed tempers, petulant players and umpires having a word with them were plenty. The fact that a few crucial decisions, especially that of gamechanger Cheteshwar Pujara in both the innings, went against the former champions and home side Karnataka cannot be ignored.
It’s not just Karnataka, even Saurashtra lost out on a wicket; and during the quarterfinal between Karnataka and Rajasthan, both teams were singed equally by doubtful decisions.
Backing the use of DRS, Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Unadkat said, “It’s good for the game if we can include more technology. We’ve seen it at the international level as well. It has helped teams to take decisions. I think the BCCI would be the best judge to look at it.”
Concurring with Unadkat, Karnataka coach Yere Goud pointed out, “Yes, definitely, if we can use DRS, there would be nothing like it. We would have a fair game.”
The call has grown louder more because of the increased workload for the 110-odd umpires on the BCCI roster across four grades. With the introduction of new teams and with matches in excess of 2,000 this season across age groups, technology-aided umpiring is clearly the way forward.
